over the past couple of days i squeaked out some music for Silhoutte-Robin's On3 Roof web series shot in The Sims 2. headed up by Elikhi - these are cool folks from RedvsBlue so head over and show your support! episode 6 should be out very shortly.

i like this footage alot. not only the concept of a simulated person painting art but also in the way the scene plays itself out: the sim has a whole palette of color to choose from but only uses black and then only to paint around the void of a person; never the details of the actual person. it is as if the sim cannot break through its boundaries to understand humanity. while the sims probably only paint pre-programmed images, there is some cool work going on in the area of virtual painting/painters.

my first attempt for this was classical, inspired by the painting/fine art imagery and the way the first few brush strokes reminded me of a conductor's baton but it didn't have enough energy to kick off a show. i used whistling instead to reflect the painter working away on his painting and added some driving drums plus a couple of crunchy guitars!

i am now the official music and audio post for the upcoming web series The Sponsorhood - an animated show shot in The Sims 2. Yesterday, despite a loosing game of snakes and laptops, I was able to score and audio the trailer. DiMono from Red vs Blue (108 friends/49 karma) had already provided the suspense section but i ended it with a boom!

this production is being done entirely virtually - with people from across the world - and is an interesting experiment in new media being done in new ways. not so surprising perhaps though considering i met all these people online in the first place.

The New Enemy

there is a new arch enemy.

Dr. Mantra and his evil yoga remain a certain threat to all of society. but this new enemy is certainly a threat to me. more frightening is that this enemy has been living with me and attacking me at every opportunity. no, it is not my cat Orfeo. it is one of my very own piano benches!

this is The New Enemy. not once have i been able to move it anywhere without fighting with it. (the legs collapse but don't fasten to anything and swing about freely when they are not locked for sitting) some of these fights have been quite serious.

once i was carrying The New Enemy and another piece of gear down the stairs and the The New Enemy saw its opportunity. it kicked its legs out forcing me off balance and then, catching my toe on the cuff of my pants, i was suddenly falling face first down the stairs holding sizable pieces of equipment. by some miracle that i cannot recall as i was busy watching my life flash before my eyes, i escaped unscathed. but this is not the usual outcome in such encounters with The New Enemy.

last night, The New Enemy struck again. twice. the first attack was on the way to the gig. i was traversing my stairwell, which is choked full of gear since The Bunka closed unexpectedly, and the The New Enemy struck at the most precarious of moments, sending me headlong into the wall. i had no other option to but to lean forward and use my head in an attempt to avoid totally crashing out and prop myself up against the wall. boom! then, after the gig, The New Enemy struck again, kicking its legs out and slamming them back on the tips of my cold fingers. bam!

there seems little i can do. however it may be mad at me because orfeo's claws are not so kind or gentle with it.

i have had some questions about how this all works: visual elements - such as video clips, animations, stills - and effects (3d f/x, transitions, overlays, etc) are assigned to notes on the piano keyboard. the effect is that when you are playing music on the keyboard, you are also triggering the visuals at the same time.

i am currently working on different visual keyboard note assignment schemes and approaches (and there turns out to be an astonishingly large number of possible ways to link musical elements and performance to video!)

when I am performing on the piano, i do not want middle aged women to suddenly sit right down beside me uninvited and pretend to play along. nor do i want to them to rub up beside me. perhaps they were beautiful once in their youth but let's face it, their glory and salad days are over - it's cougar time now. get away from me and get it someplace else

this happens pretty much every week at the centro gig and its driving me crazy. except once, when it wasn't cougar time...

also, sold out show for justin rutledge's record release @ the rivoli - they turned away over 75 people. another show coming up as well - i like playing in that band = great songs and musicans plus no one crowding my bench.

finally connected with the Yoga Chick at starbucks. despite my valiant attempts to save her from yoga, she maintained that yoga was an energizing, positive endeavour. though i described the impending dangers to society, she could not see the connections nor the evil machinations of Dr. Mantra.

however all was not lost, we agreed to meet up later next week for a night out. perhaps this is my chance to penetrate Dr. Mantra's inner lair, or at least the Yoga Chick's.

Fresh Baked Goods

i am back from the future and almost back to the present! i am glad that i have been missed in my absence. it is good to hear some 21st century swearing again. swearing in the 3rd millenium is completely different. (you wouldn't dare call someone a 'numlock' for example)

while in the future, i have been working on the HatHead sound - making some necessary adjustments as required by the future passage of time to ensure that music is saved from the machines. in this new sound there is no differentiating between making music and mixing it, between what is performed and what is a sample as performances become samples themselves.

... i have never been a quitter ...

here is a preview of the new HatHead sound. this entire track is all fresh baked goods and was performed and mixed from scratch at the same time. it is quite a new experience to mix while simultaneously recording your own performance. this track is my first pass through - starting with a free flute part and spending some time working the beat + some cool appregiator lines too - click hear for the beginning of HatHead Strikes Back!

just watching the sun going down on my deck and wondering why i have this book with 2 notes to myself in it that tell me 'do not read this book' again.

recently i heard some rumba music from the Congo playing in a serbian taxi driver's tape deck. this guy knew his music and the african rumba has stuck itself inside my head for a while now. no surprise then that watching the sun go down and picking away at my guitar, this little african tune made it's way out of my head.

i am late. in fact i am two years late for my date with the yoga chick. not good. i collapsed the quantum wave prematurely during my travel back in time. not good. but here i am. and even if you hit the mark with time travel, you can still never be sure if the exact same event in the present will happen again when you return back through time. this is due to the uncertainty principle.

A lil' about the uncertainty principle...

the reason that you cannot return to the exact same present moment in time is due to the uncertainty principle which, compouned by relativity at the sub-atomic level, means that you cannot ever precisely know both an object's exact momentum and location at the same time. so one can know that certainly something happened within a range of time but never precisely where - an all important consideration since your sub-atomic particles are being accelerated.

then your own reintroduction into the time stream forever changes the old present to a new one. meaning one can travel back in time and though it will be close to the old present, it will never be exactly the same. meaning, no yoga chick.

i was a little distracted from last night's Y3K performance - that was and will be the most awesome show ever. the biggest party in the history of the world with the largest dance floor. jamming with The Mighty Swarm and Trou Noir - a full on planet shaking exercise! i can't wait to do it again!

Branching Networks

how this blog works:

a different story is told depending upon the post reading sequence. readers can select links embedded within the blog and be taken directly to a specified post and, since posts have each multiple links - typically one going forward in time and another backward - this is essentially a branching network structure where posts represent nodes that are connected by links which are the branches.

after writing that explanation, i confess that my blog until now has always told the same story albeit in different sequences. from here on in, it will tell different stories dependant upon the reader's seletion of links. some posts may actually have the context to used in multiple story lines (though will would increase the probability of a feedback loop in the plot)

also, it will be impossible to tell which posts happen 'from here on in' as some posts are already published in the future. however this then makes these posts their own unique storyline as well. another consequence is that posts from the future will eventually intermingle with posts from the present as the present catches up with the fiture - creating multiple presents interwoven when read chronologically.

other branching network concepts i am working on:

- a system to present the history of the next 1000 years in multimedia - but shows a different history everytime every time it is presented. the intention is to demonstrate that the future is not fixed, and while inevitable, it is also arbitrary.

- a streaming internet radio channel that allows listeners to influence the actual tracks being played. the listeners will be in essence remixing the music.

The Emperor's New Mind
Roger Penrose - 1990
Oxford University Press

the other day i discovered that i had a book that i actually had purchased in the future. i first read this book in 2010, twenty years after its first publication but wanted to give it a second attempt with a fresh mind as my first attempt was unsatisifying and so sent the book back in time where i had not yet read it with this note to myself:

"I first picked up this book for a couple of reasons:

i) one of the only science books that chooses to describe the emergence of intelligence in any other way than evolution

ii) is written by Roger Penrose, world renowned mathematician and thinker. "

Then I put the book down only a couple of chapters into it - the book was a weakly camoflauged attempt at denying the mechanical nature of existence: that somehow humans are unique and special in some mysterious way; that man is truly the paragon of animals and at 'the top". This is a philosophy which has only served to distract and constrain scientific achievement since the beginnings of science. There is no room for hubris in scientific thinking."

these are such strong words that i need to reassess the matter - did i miss something? when did i start using captial letters? when did i stop? questions to be answered!

perhaps i didn't understand Penrose's proposition at the time - what is all this fuss that he is making about quantum gravity as the source of human consciousness anyway? just voodoo black magic to me at the time.

now i am better studied on quantum theory and recall Penrose's proposition. since quantum mechanics demonstrates that things literally come from nothing, i was intrigued to see how Penrose applied quantum mechanics to neuroscience - where do our thoughts come from? is our consciousness a product of quantum level interactions? very provocative thinking.

but the book is really a defense around how machines cannot and will not ever have a comparable intelligence to humans; not about the nature of human consciousness.

Warning Signs
there is a tremendous amount of cross-referencing to other pages elsewhere in the book. this style of writing is very distracting and as a reader you are continually forced to break your train of thought and hunt around for the reference. i am always wary of this writing technique - it is as though the author is trying to hide the weakness of his/her argument behind unnecessary complexity. this book is over 500 pages long and i am also aways wary of authors who require so much space to present their thinking; it usually indicates a great deal of time defending inconsistencies.

Penrose's Slippery Slope
on second reading and after a couple of chapters, Penrose's book still comes across as a what-ever-it-takes defense of 'only humans can be genuinely intelligent'. note that the italics in the last quote was not emphasized by me but by Penrose, stepping onto the slippery slope as he tries to make his distinction between "intelligence" and "genuine intelligence". Penrose grants machines 'intelligence' but reserves 'genuine intelligence' for humans. you cannot make something true by simply italicizing it. and in a obvious attempt to skirt the slippery slope, Penrose uses these terms quite liberally in his thought experiments without defining their exact meanings until much later in the book. perhaps Penrose is trying to trick the reader in accepting his terms without defining them?

Penrose puts both feet firmly on the slippery slope when he discusses the classification of Artificial Intelligence (AI). these arbitrary classifications of AI surround the respective models being used to develop AI. Penrose grants that some of these types of AI may be achieved but holds that the existing models will never be equivalent to human intelligence. Penrose completely discounts other potential computing paradigms and their application to AI models simply because they do not yet exist. for example, Penrose glosses over quantum computing as an AI model not constrained by current technology barriers by downplaying any future development of this technology. (but on the other hand, Penrose then holds out for quantum discoveries as the source of understanding human consciousness).

Who Out-Godel's Us?
Penrose digs up the Godel's Incompleteness argument - that things can be true but this cannot be formally determined by the system that they are being described in. what is always avoided by thinkers who hold up human's abilities to "godelize" as our intelligent uniqueness is the necessary consideration that there are also things that we cannot 'godelize', that there are also physical limitiations on our biologically provided intelligence and, therefore, we share the same dilemma of the mechanical machines - we cannot know everything and there will always be things that are 'true' yet we will be unable to see their 'truth'.

To Err Is Human
i had to put Penrose's book back down again when he proposed the intelligence double-standard: if a machine makes a mistake, it is not intelligent. we say "to err is human" and acknowledge the unavoidable human condition of learning from our mistakes. Penrose claims that since Deep Blue made an obvious error when playing chess in game 2 against Gary Kasparov, that making mistakes means that something does qualify as intelligent. Gary Kasparov, in a recent rematch with the machines - a laptop this time, not a super computer- made an obvious mistake that cost him the match. does this make Gary Kasparov, the strongest chess player in the history of the game, unintelligent?

Moving Targets
opponents to artifical intelligence simply keep redefining the meaning of 'articifical intelligence' as 'things machines haven't yet done'. will machines ever have human intelligence? of course not - humans are biological and machines are mechanical. Will machines ever be intelligent? depends who you ask. ask my cat chatbot and it will tell you that it is.

i am going to bring this book back with me into the future so to avoid thinking i need to read it again.

i am back from two years in future and just in time for the labour day long weekend...just in time to see some sassy maples already starting to splash their colours about.

as the summer comes to an end, so too does the HatHead Late Show. it has been a great summer and i have met lot's of people, got my gear sorted out & tested, and had a ton of fun! Thanks to everyone who made it possible and everyone who made it out!!! i am going to be concentrating on completing some studio work and plan on a live show in about a month or so. it has been crazy busy for HatHead lately but then again saving the future is no easy gig!

i am also preparing for my duet performance with wabot-2 - the robot keyboard prodigy. wabot-2 is the most technically proficient musical robot of all time though has been only playing sad ballads since he broke up with his wife. wabot-2 and i will be performing for the opening of the Disney theme park on the moon.

Several days ago...
in fact the very next day after complaining about not having the right version of the music software i needed, i was successfully installed in time for the HatHead Late Show and then i spent the next couple of days up north really working through the manual - almost done. truly awesome software! i especially like that you can add recursion with an element of randomness to musical structures. the super portable midi controller/sound card i got is also very cool and makes me think i can electro-busk. just need to figure out powering things (laptop, vocoder) and portable amplification (easy).

Several nights ago...
upon returning to the future via cryogenic sleep, i caught up with old friends i haven't yet met and then did the largest ever performance for the world's Y3K celebrations. i rocked the globe hard together with The Mighty Nanobot Swarm and Trou Noir. man i love that gig. the largest dance floor in the history of the planet. the rebirth of music. sub-woofers bluebeamed directly into your hips. the leaders of the world shaking their butts. shaking the world. so much so that i missed coming back to the present and landed a couple of years from now. so then i had to go back into cryogenic freezing to get to the future where time travel exists so i could then get back to the present again. looser.

Today...
i am back and can no longer defeat the date lock on my expired beta version of the music software I am using and so must return to the older version - thus am stalling a bit as the new version, at least from my test drives, does everything i need music creation and performance software to do so why would i want to start something only to change/redo it again? (i ordered my new version over a week & half ago - where is it?) i almost also have all of the gear i need to fully rock in the present but have to get a couple of things serviced - which means my vocoder is out of commission at the moment. gonna have to do some old fashioned throwin' at this next HatHead Late Show

Yesterday...
yesterday before my regular wednesday evening gig at Centro's, i had a fierce battle with Dr. Mantra, the evil yoga master whose plot to take over the world has dire consequences for the future. it did not go well.

i burst in on a room full of people all tied up in knots while their heart rates were lowering but was able to quickly reverse the process by slamming down some blockbusting beats! Dr. Mantra countered with the Dance of Shiva and it was not a pretty sight - there were pieces of yoga mat everywhere. i had to split but was able to get some yoga chick's email after helping get her out of the knot she was in.

tonight i will go back into cryogenic freezing, awake in the future and return to the present in the morning. then brunch with the yoga chick, so not a total defeat.

Hello - this is my first blog.

this blog will chronicle my return to the present from 1000 years in the future on my mission to save the future of music from the machines. this blog will also report back from the future about things that are happening and have happened there. please feel free to ask me any questions about the future as i am always happy to answer them!

An introduction...
though travelling back from the future, i am originally from this time and underwent cryogenic freezing, with my hat on, but when i was awakened, discovered that i was the only living living musician and so have returned to the present to change the course of the future. it won't be easy but together, united, we can save music and the world!

A lil' bout cryogenic freezing...
there's nothing like falling asleep and waking up just when you get there! when you wake up after a 1000 years, you really have to take a pee but you don't want to get out from under the duvet. then you get some brunch. you can get brunch everyday of the week in the future (but still only until 3pm). sometimes, instead of going to bed, i go back into cryogenic freezing, awake in the future, then in the morning i travel back in time to the present again.

A lil' bout time travel...
time travel is nothing like it is portrayed in the movies and books of our time. there are no flashing lights, there is no pain, no discombobulation. it is instantaneous. all of a sudden you are there. time travel is based upon both old fashioned relativity and quantum mechanics such that all of your sub-atomic particles are accelerated until they are moved backwards (and forwards!) in time via the uncertainty principle, then the quantum wave is collapsed. easy as that!

in the future, the world is like one giant tropical resort...people get up early to get the best chairs, line up at the buffet, sit around the pool all day, go back to the buffet, get another drink at the margurita bar...they are bored out of their minds and absolutely hate it but it's better than working (which is why no one comes back in time from the future)

The Beginning

chuckie asked 'why the deep freeze?' and so i have travelled back in time to the beginning of it all. the very beginning of HatHead.

The very beginning...

i have just finished the last touches on the mix of a new album and needed some unbiased, honest feedback. the fortune teller at southern comfort always has some good, provoking things to say so i went off to see her. i set-up my keyboard, booted up my laptop, and performed the whole album from start to finish, perfectly, i was exhausted from the energy of it all. then the fortune teller leaned forward and told me these words:

"...the world is not ready for you yet..."

when i asked 'when will the world be ready?', she took a long pause, looked deeply into my eyes and said in a dark, quiet voice 'when the devil has learned to skate'. i left crestfallen - this certainly sounds like a long, long time to wait.

i have my first music show at the cameron house tomorrow but think i will undergo cryogenic freezing tonight instead - they're not ready for me yet anyway. how long to sleep? the fortune teller made it seem like a really long time so how about a thousand years? sounds pretty good i guess. wonder if mankind will still be around? better freeze my cat Orfeo along with me just in case. and better wear a hat too in case it's really, really cold. hope they still have coffee in the future. and kitty litter too.
